“Drakes Island -- God surely placed a little bit of Heaven at this spot on earth. Our family has now returned to Drakes Island for several years for our summer vacation. We are 5 adults and 3 granddaughters. We have never tired of returning to the beaches of Maine for the past 14 yrs. The last 6 years have been spent on Drakes. Believe me, once you experience this you will want to return as we have. In fact, if you are lucky enough to get one of the best weeks for a ME vacation with a house on Drakes, you better keep your name on it to return the next year or you might be out of luck.

What impresses us beyond the beauty of being on the coast of Maine is the uniqueness of this island. You literally escape the rush of traffic and emerge on an island of lovely homes with gorgeous green lawns, trees and flowers. Now imagine this look where these homes have the beach and ocean as their front view, even though they have a lawn in front of these homes. It is always very quiet and absolutely nothing commercial. Nothing is sold on the island, but once you drive off (approx. 1 1/2 miles to Rt. 1) you have access to anything you need. Lobster, good meat and groceries, restaurants, and the best doughnuts anywhere. A must is the famous Maine Diner that is very close -- lobster pie and the blueberry chocolate chip hot fudge sundae. It is always busy.

An added plus: great hiking. You can walk for miles, meet almost no one, or maybe no one on the beach if you walk north toward Kennebunkport through the Wells National Estuarine Area to the Rachael Carson Wildlife Refuge. The water is always clear and clean and can be shallow quite far out.

We are so grateful to the kind folks that make it possible for people like us that they open their homes to renters (it is not a large rental area so that is the reason for the wide open space and tranquility) because this is the only way we would be able to experience spending time on this island.

Credit must be given to our realtor, Bonnie Ames. She is the best. She is always quick to respond to any question and she could not be more helpful. Due to Bonnie, when you walk into the home you have been fortunate to rent -- be assured it is immaculate and she expects you to leave it as you found it. The homeowners are very fortunate to have her overseeing their properties. We can only give the highest recommendation to anything about Drakes.”

My husband and I have rented numerous times from Bonnie Ames and found each experience to be not only pleasant, but we made a new friend. Our particular favorite spot has been Bellmer Cottage which is set just a few steps from the beach. The accommodations are quite complete and we "moved in" for several weeks at a time for quiet repose, just one of the special joys of this Drakes Island rental. It's charming, comfortable, modern kitchen and bathroom facilities (and additional convenient outside shower), private parking for your vehicle and responsible dog owners can register "Fido" for vacation too.”
